After 30 years in healthcare, I've learned that true success is not measured by titles or achievements, but by the people we help grow and succeed.

Beyond Titles: Building a Legacy Through People

[00:00:02] Introduction
Hello, everyone, and welcome to the WorthMinds Podcast, part of the Worthy 100 2026 series, where we celebrate voices shaping leadership and legacy.I'm Lillian Chew Siew Mei, Chief Nurse, Singapore Healthcare at Raffles Medical Group. Over the past three decades, I have had the privilege of serving in nursing, education, leadership, and healthcare transformation.Today, I would like to share a simple but important message: leadership is not about titles. Leadership is about people. Ultimately, the legacy we leave is measured not by what we achieve ourselves, but by the opportunities, confidence, and inspiration we create for others.[00:00:53] Rethinking LeadershipWhen people hear the word leader, they often think about authority, influence, position, or status.Earlier in my career, I viewed leadership in a similar way. I believed success meant progressing to the next role, taking on greater responsibilities, and reaching new milestones. Those achievements are important, and they represent growth and commitment. However, over time, I realized that leadership means something much deeper.Leadership is not about how high we rise. It is about how many people rise because we were there. The true measure of leadership is not found on an organizational chart. It is reflected in the growth, confidence, and success of the people we serve. That realization transformed the way I lead today.[00:01:56] The Power of Belief and MentorshipI did not reach this stage of my career alone. Many mentors, supervisors, colleagues, and friends invested their time and belief in me, encouraging me to step outside my comfort zone.Looking back, one of the most powerful gifts anyone can offer another person is belief. Sometimes, all it takes is one person saying, "I believe you can do this."Those words can change a person's confidence. They can change a person's career. In some cases, they can even change a life.Because others invested in me, I have always felt a responsibility to pay that gift forward. Every leader has the opportunity to become that person for someone else.[00:02:51] Redefining SuccessAs my career evolved, so did my definition of success. When I was younger, success often meant qualifications, promotions, awards, and recognition. While those achievements were meaningful, they are no longer how I define success today.Today, success means seeing others grow. Success is watching a young nurse find confidence in their voice. Success is seeing someone lead a challenging project for the first time. Success is witnessing a former mentee develop into a respected leader.Success is knowing that someone achieved more because of the support, encouragement, or opportunities provided along the way.Today, I can honestly say that success is not what I accomplish alone. Success is what we accomplish together.[00:03:53] Technology and Human Connection in HealthcareWe live in an extraordinary period of change. AI, digital transformation, advanced analytics, and innovative technologies are reshaping healthcare in remarkable ways. These developments create exciting possibilities. They help us improve efficiency, strengthen decision-making, and support safer and more effective patient care. However, there is an important truth we must never forget: technology can improve efficiency and decision-making, but it cannot replace empathy, trust, or human connection.Patients may remember the treatment they receive, but very often, what remains with them most deeply is how they were treated as a person. The future belongs to leaders who can successfully combine innovation and compassion.[00:04:57] Creating More LeadersPeople sometimes ask me what I consider my greatest achievement. My answer usually surprises them. It is not a title. It is not an award. It is not a position. My greatest achievement is people. The nurses who have grown into confident professionals, the managers who have become strategic leaders, the colleagues who discovered strengths they never knew they possessed, and the teams that continued to thrive long after a project or initiative had ended. For me, leadership has never been about creating followers. Leadership is about creating more leaders. There is no greater reward than watching others exceed expectations and achieve things they once thought were beyond their reach.[00:05:53] The Legacy We Leave BehindOne question I often reflect on is this: What remains when a leader leaves?Titles do not remain. Positions eventually change. Even programs and initiatives may evolve over time. What remains is culture. What remains are values. What remains are the behaviours we encourage and the beliefs we nurture. That is why I believe leadership is stewardship. We are temporary custodians of the organizations and communities we serve. Our role is not simply to manage today's challenges. Our responsibility is to prepare others for tomorrow's opportunities. When leaders focus on stewardship, they think beyond themselves. They focus on creating lasting impact.[00:06:56] Collaboration and Collective LeadershipOne of my greatest privileges on my professional journey has been engaging with nursing leaders around the world.Through my interactions with healthcare leaders globally, I have learned that our aspirations are remarkably similar. We all want safer care, healthier communities, stronger healthcare systems, and empowered healthcare professionals. While our healthcare systems may differ, our purpose remains the same. The challenges before us are too complex for any one organization or professional to solve alone. The future requires collaboration. The future requires partnership. The future requires collective leadership.Together, we can achieve far more than any one individual ever could.[00:07:55] Leadership Begins With YouSo, I would like to leave you with an important message. You do not need a title to lead. You do not need permission to make a difference.Leadership can begin at the bedside. Leadership can begin in the classroom. Leadership can begin during a meeting. Leadership can begin in your community.Leadership begins the moment you decide to positively influence another person's life.Never underestimate the power of a kind word. Never underestimate the impact of encouragement. And never underestimate the difference that genuine support can make. The smallest act of leadership can create a ripple effect that extends far beyond what we can see.[00:08:50] A Legacy Built Through PeopleAs I reflect on more than 33 years in healthcare, one lesson stands above all others: leadership is not about position, title, or recognition. Leadership is about the difference we make in the lives of others.People may forget our projects, presentations, or achievements, but they will remember how we helped them grow, how we supported them, and how we made them believe in themselves. My personal philosophy remains simple. Leadership is not a destination. It is a journey of influence and impact.Start where you are, lead with your heart, and let your passion create positive change. The greatest legacy we leave is not what we accomplish ourselves, but what continues because we invested in others.[00:09:51] Closing MessageThank you for joining me on the WorthMinds Podcast, part of the Worthy 100 2026 series.I am Lillian Chew Siew Mei, Chief Nurse, Singapore Healthcare at Raffles Medical Group, and I believe the most meaningful legacy we can build is through people.Thank you.
